Claire Barnes Photography | FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
We've put this FAQ page together to help answer any questions you might have about our sessions.  If your question isn’t answered here then please do not hesitate to contact us at

Q: Where does the session take place?

The session will take place in our relaxed and well equipped home studio in Islington.

Q: How much do your sessions cost?

Please take a look at our pricing pages to see the costs of our sessions.

Q: How do I book?

You can call us on 07985 270561 or book via the Booking Request Form.

Q: How do I pay for my session?

Our preferred method of payment is via bank transfer.  We also accept cash or credit/debit card payments. We do not currently accept Paypal.  Details will be provided in your booking confirmation email.

Q: What is the ideal age for a newborn studio session?

Our Newborn Studio Sessions are design for babies under 4 weeks old, however the ideal age is between 5-14 days. When babies are that tiny they spend a lot of time sleeping and still like to curl up into poses similar to the positions they were in when they were in the womb. After two weeks babies go through a growth spurt and will start stretching their arms and legs so some older babies will not be as amenable to curling up for a picture or sleeping as soundly, which is needed for some of the poses and photographs in props like the baskets, buckets, swing or hammocks.

Q: How far in advance should I book a Newborn shoot?

The best time to book is around the time of your second scan.  We book a preliminary date approximately 8-10 days after your estimated due date, this date can be moved accordingly if baby arrives early or late.  We do not recommend waiting until baby is born to book as our sessions tend to book up in advance and last minute availability is therefore limited.  However, occasionally we do have last minute slots available so if you've just had a baby and would like to make a last minute booking please do enquire.

Q: What if my baby arrives earlier or later than expected?

Firstly, don't panic!  Babies rarely arrive on their due date and we make allowances for this.

If baby arrives early - please contact us as soon as possible after baby is born (ideally within the first 7 days) so we can arrange your session for an earlier date if need be.

If baby arrives on time - please contact us as soon as possible after baby is born (ideally within the first week) to confirm your preliminary booked date.

If baby arrives late - please contact us in the week following your due date to advise me that baby has not made his/her arrival yet so we can move the preliminary date forward and keep in contact.

Q: How long do Newborn Sessions take?

It depends on baby but typically a newborn session lasts around 2-3 hours.  Please ensure you bring enough feeds to last this amount of time if not breast feeding.  It is also advisable to bring an extra feed as it may help baby to settle into a nice deep sleep.

Q: What should we expect during a Newborn Sessions?

We aim to make your newborn session a relaxed and enjoyable experience.  Every newborn sessions is different as it is centered around baby and every baby is different.  We usually start off by undressing baby, wrapping them up and giving them a good feed and a cuddle with mummy to settle them off into a nice sleep.  Don't worry if they don't fall asleep straight away (this is perfectly normal) as we can do some awake shots until they are ready to snooze.  We aim to do around 3-5 different setups with variations in poses (head bands, hats, wraps etc) stopping for feeds and cuddles when necessary.  If you wish to have nude shots of baby, please do not worry about baby pooing or weeing on us or our props, we are totally prepared for this, it is totally natural and everything is washed after each session.  We usually finish with a few informal shots with mummy and daddy (if desired).  The only expectation of you is to sit back and relax whilst we work our magic and tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.  Please feel free to bring any snacks to keep you nourished (especially if breast feeding).

Q: Can I bring older siblings to my newborn session?

The best results are achieved when we are just working with baby.  However, if you wish to have photos of your new arrival with their older sibling(s) we are more than happy to attempt this, however, we can not guarantee sibling portraits and results will depend on your child's age and temperament with your new baby.  Please do bear in mind that it is a long session and very warm to keep baby settled so it is not practical to bring siblings along for the whole session. If you wish to attempt sibling portraits there is an additional £100 charge on the session price and you must arrange for someone to bring them for the first part of the session and take them away after we have done some.  Please also keep in mind that we can only attempt photographing them together if they are willing, baby is well settled and we deem it safe to do so and we will make every effort to achieve some for you.

Q: Can I bring my friend, Aunty, Sister, etc to the session?

Please only bring those who are being photographed or who are required to help as there is limited space in our home studio and we need to keep distractions to a minimum.

Q: What should we expect during an Older Babies / Children session?

During an Older Babies/Children Session you can expect your child(ren) to have fun.  There are no rules or expectations of the parents or the children.  We try to make them feel relaxed and encourage them to laugh, play and do whatever makes their heart content.  A session usually doesn't go well when parents encourage their child(ren) to sit still or smile on command.  We prefer to capture children as they are, so just let them be and trust that Claire will anticipate the moment to capture their personality and the types of images that drew you to her work.

Q: Can I take photos during the session?

The use of client cameras, phone cameras, video cameras or other recording devices are not permitted.

Q: When is the best time to book a maternity session?

Maternity Sessions usually take place between 30-36 weeks when your bump is nice and round but you're still finding it easy to move around.  Therefore it is advisable to make your booking at 20-24 weeks to ensure we have availability when you are reaching that glowing peak.

Q: How many people can be in a family session?

Due to time and space restrictions the maximum group size for a Family Session, including parents is 5.  If you have a larger family group than this we may still be able to book you in using an alternative studio, however additional charges will apply.

Q: What should we wear for a family session?

It really depends on your tastes and what you feel comfortable in.  Plain colours work well.  Try to avoid shiny, overly bright or heavily patterned fabrics as they can tend to overtake photographs or distract from the main subject, you.  Ultimately though, the portraits are about you and your family so it comes down to what represents you best.

Q: What happens after the shoot?

After your session we will download and examine your images, selecting the best for editing.  Claire hand edits every image, correcting colour, tone, contrast, blemishes, artifacts and any other non permanent features to create your finished images.  Many of her images such as the swing and hammock, require a technique called compositing whereby my assistant is removed from the safely achieved pose.  Once editing is completed your images will be uploaded to a secure online gallery and you will receive an email (with a link and password) inviting you to view the gallery.  You make you selection from this gallery for your images on cd and/or print products and email this to us so we may process your order.

Q: How long after the session will the photos be ready for viewing?

Our editing turnaround is approximately 3-4 weeks.  The quoted turnaround is approximate and not guaranteed.  In busier periods or in the case of last minute bookings, or when extensive editing is required, editing of your final gallery may take up to 6 weeks. One or two low-resolution watermarked sneak peek images will be provided approximately 1 week after your session to give you an idea of how your finished images will look.

Q: How do I choose my pictures?

Each picture in your image gallery will have a number displayed above or below (depending on device).  Simply email us with your chosen image number(s) for your digital or print products.

Q: Can everyone see my online gallery?

No.  Your online gallery is private and password protected.  Only those you give the link and password to can view your gallery.

Q: What can I do with my digital images?

You can print them, share them online, email them, use them to make photo gifts, canvas prints anything you like for personal use.  A copyright release is provided on the CD.  The only thing you cannot do is use any images or create derivative works for commercial purposes, advertising or monetary gain.  Claire retains copyright of all images.

Q: Who owns copyright of the images?

Claire retains copyright of all the images she produces.  However, all purchased digital images come with copyright release allowing unlimited printing in any format or size, with any photo lab or printing service for personal use.  Commercial use of my images is not permitted. (This simply means that you cannot sell her images for profit or use them for advertising purposes).

Q: Can I purchase extra images later?

Yes extra digital images, prints and products images can be purchased at the price listed in the pricing section.

Q. How long do you keep our images?

All of your edited images are archived for a minimum of 3 months (6 months in some cases, see packages for details).  After this point only purchased images will be archived for emergency backup/replacement purposes for a further 6 months.  All unselected images will be deleted securely 30 days after your image gallery expires.  The expiry date of your image galley will be shown on screen when accessing your gallery.  Online image gallery validity extensions can be purchased for a small fee.

Q: Will my images appear on your website/blog/facebook/twitter?

We love to share the images we create on my website and social media as it is the best form of advertising after word of mouth from happy clients.  If you are happy for us to do this we may add some of your images to our website portfolio, write a short blog post (with pictures) or share one or two of your photos on our facebook page or other social networking sites.  However, if you do not wish for any of your images to be posted on our website and/or blog, simply let us know when booking or at your session and we will honor your request and keep your images private.  We do not charge a fee for you to keep your images private.

Q: Can I change my package after booking?

You are permitted to change package at any time on or before the day of the session. You cannot change or upgrade your package after the session or after seeing the photos and the pricing relevant to the chosen package will apply for any additional purchases.

Q: What if I need to rearrange my session?

For non older baby/child/family/maternity sessions - If you need to rearrange your session you must give no less than 2 weeks notice so we can arrange an alternative date.  Failure to contact to us in good time may result in us being unable to rearrange your session and you losing your deposit.

For newborn sessions. Due to baby's arrival not being an exact science in most cases the original booked date is preliminary and it is possible to rearrange this date if required due to baby's early or late arrival or a clash with another more important appointment. Please contact me as soon as possible after baby is born to arrange the actual date of your session.

Q: What if I need to cancel?

We require a non refundable booking fee of £50 (or £100 for Cake Smash sessions) when booking.  If you cancel your session for any reason or do not turn up you will lose the booking fee. The booking fee is deducted from your chosen package price the balance of which is due on or before the day of your photo session. We do not accept unsecured bookings.

Q: Do you do canvas prints?

Q: Whats the best age for photographs?

Well there are many.  Below is a guide for the best ages for each stage and what to expect.

Newborns - 0-4 weeks with best results being achieved under 2 weeks when baby is still sleepy and curls up naturally as they were in the womb.  Babies change rapidly at this stage being far more alert and wriggly by the 3rd week and after 4 weeks many poses are not achievable.  However, some of the more simply poses may be achievable past the 4 week mark.  Please contact us at if you have a baby over 4 weeks and would like a sleepy newborn style session and we will do my best to accommodate your desires.

Older babies - between 6 and 9 months when baby is sitting up but not yet crawling away.  Often referred to by photographers as 'plant pot' stage.

Toddlers - 1-2 years.  Although a tricky stage as little ones have often become a bit willful and stubborn, they are also full of character and charm which can make for wonderful pictures.  A great age for fun and messy cake smash or old tin bath shoots as sitting still is rarely on the cards.

Children - 2-5 years by now your child has really developed a sense of what they like, and more importantly what they don't like, so sessions are usually themed around this.  Feel free to bring a favorite toy, welly boots or whatever they happen to be attached to at the moment as it can be used during the session.

Q: Do you offer training?

I'm afraid we do not offer photography training.
